School History

NARHS was founded in 1989, by a homeschooling family in the state of Maine.  This family had a summer business, buying and selling homeschooling curricula and resources to homeschooling families around the country in a “bookmobile”.  It was through their interactions with these homeschooling families that they saw the need for something like NARHS.  After working with the Maine Department of Education, they developed a program for homeschool students to earn recognized credits for their high school work.  This family then founded NARHS as a support for homeschoolers in the NE region of the U.S., both to offer assistance throughout the homeschool year and to provide an accredited transcript at the end of each homeschool year.  Since then, NARHS has grown, with both staff and enrolled students, throughout the U.S. and internationally.  Although first founded in Maine, NARHS headquarters are now located in Washington state.  The goal of NARHS staff is still as it was in the beginning, to provide assistance to homeschooling families.

About NARHS

The North Atlantic Regional High School is based in Auburn, Maine, with our business office in Yakima, Washington. NARHS is a state-authorized private school recognized by the Department of Education and regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools www.msa-cess.org. We assist students, their parents, and our partner schools to create a customized high school program. NARHS operates under the authority of Maine law. Specifically the North Atlantic Regional High School complies with the provisions of 20_A M.R.S.A. 5001 (a) which directs the Maine Department of Education to identify NARHS as a “private school authorized by the department as providing equivalent instruction.” Under these guidelines, NARHS can issue transcripts and a diploma.
